In California, the court can make orders for grandparents to spend time with their grandchildren. Grandparents’ rights are subordinate to parents’ rights. It is presumed a parent is fit and capable of making decisions impacting a child, but in certain limited circumstances where it can be established that a) a parent has cut off all communications with a grandchild and b) a grandparent has a pre-existing relationship with a grandchild, the Court can make orders ensuring contact.
